AWS Failure: Elastic Load Balancer Disruption

AWS Failure: Elastic load balancer disruption (ELB) caused a partial service disruption in a specific region. The issue caused traffic routing failures, preventing applications from effectively balancing requests.

Reason for AWS ELB Partial Service Disruption:

Increased Traffic or Load: Sudden surges in requests can overwhelm the load balancer or backend instances.
Misconfigured Health Checks: Incorrect settings can cause healthy instances to be marked as unhealthy.
Control Plane Issues: Problems with AWS’s underlying infrastructure can impair ELB’s ability to manage traffic.
Dependency Failures: Service Outages like Route 53 or network infrastructure might impact ELB performance.

Troubleshooting Steps:

Step 1. Verify EBS Volume Status:

Check the status in the AWS Management Console or use the CLI:

Step 2. Detach and Reattach Volumes:

  • Stop the affected instance.
  • Detach the EBS volume:

  • Reattach it to a healthy instance to inspect data.

Step 3. Inspect System Logs:

Look for application or OS log errors, accessible through the EC2 console or CloudWatch.

Step 4. Recover from Snapshot:

If the volume is unrecoverable, restore from the latest snapshot:

5. Utilize Multi-AZ Architectures:

RDS and other services with Multi-AZ configurations can automatically failover to healthy replicas.

6. Monitor AWS Service Health:

Follow the AWS Service Health Dashboard for updates during ongoing disruptions.
